Well, reaching HoH and holding HoH are two very different things ... I once went straight to HoH directly after fighting the unworthy
Any team style can reach halls ... depending on who and what they have to fight along the way. I'd say, at a busy time when you have to go through each and every map, your most likely candidates are going to be balance teams or the more flexible of the FoTM teams.

so that means ur directly sent to HoH, or to the map right before, i got once a 'lucky jump' that sent me to one of the maps right before HoH, but we still lost, and since im not yet r3, the chance i will get there is very small ^^

yeah all of those iway groups are not actually looking to win hall. they are simply fame farming. what the point of that is, im not entirely sure, but if you are interested in winning or holding hall, try to play a more versatile build.

You reach and hold hoh with player skill.
Even IWAY can hold if it's a good IWAY team.

Yea, initial maps are about killing enemy, then you reach maps where positioning becomes more important and running and holding skills count alot, by the time you reach HoH, you will have crossed maps which require skills, timings...so at the end maps, its more about skills.

"it's more about random chance" would be a lot closer to the truth, since the rediculous 3-way altar format means that in most cases the winner is decided by who teams up on who and whose hero is attacked when, not which team is strictly better.

If your're holding the alter and lay down EOE,it's GG half the time..sad but true.In answer to the OP's question, balanced,IWAY,ViM and every other build you can think of(well, not Minion Factory) can and has held the halls.

From what i know (getting into pvp only recently) a ranger spike team goal is to kill the enemy in the fastest way possible. They need an order necro (order of pain, order of the vampire) to cast those hexes on the target, then count to 3 and rangers attack simultaneously the victim with dual shot, quick shot and other skills to power their attack (they usually have already fav. winds and read the wind up); and they all use a 5:1 vamp string to deal even more dmg... there's a nice thread about that build in the team arena subforum i think.
Vim is Victory is mine, war elite skill... it's basically a trapper party that gains energy and health from conditions dealt to the enemy... you can fight and see how good they are in Zaishen challenge.
HoH is a pvp only map, thought u will be in it also in pve, the last level of new underworld.

We're talking about real HoH, not the PvE version that also exists now. They use the same maps, but they're completely different.

Real HoH has a Chest that appears once someone has won, and drops rare items, as well as Celestial Sigils, for the winning team. Drops can include anything that exists in the game
